The only Belted Galloway Steer entered in the 2016 Sydney Royal Purebred Steer and Carcase competition won a silver medal. The steer was overlooked by the live Judge Mr Terry Nolan in the hoof section. In the carcase competition however, the steer scored 86.5 points and was awarded a Silver Medal.
The Bekadan Flirt sired steer, weighed 432kgs live and yielded at 56.71% to produce a 245kg carcase. Rated a B- for muscle score, the carcase featured a super impressive 103 sq cm Eye Muscle Area!
The steer was exhibited by Wingham High School on behalf of Merv and Beth Presland. It sold for $3.20 a kilo at auction. The proceeds from the steer will be donated to the 10 month old daughter of a teacher who was tragically killed in a farm accident in October 2015. The teacher was a former colleague of Merv’s at Chatham High and was teaching at Wingham High at the time of the accident.
